The Next Phase of DHA: Meeting Modern Expectations with Modern Approaches

DHA is one of the most established nutrients in the market, and the category is naturally evolving to meet new expectations.

For decades, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) has been supported by a substantial body of research linking adequate intake with benefits across the human lifespan. From fetal brain development to vision support and cognitive health in aging populations, DHA remains one of the most widely studied and recognized nutrients in modern nutrition science.

Today, however, the conversation around DHA is expanding. Despite this strong scientific consensus, actual intake remains below recommended levels in many regions, highlighting the continued importance of supplementation and fortified nutrition.

Recent research continues to reinforce the value of DHA supplementation in improving omega-3 status.

A study reported by NutraIngredients in 2025 highlighted that regular DHA supplementation can raise omega-3 index levels to near-optimal ranges within approximately eight weeks. The findings illustrate how measurable physiological improvements can occur relatively quickly when consistent DHA intake is achieved.

This shift toward biomarker-based measurement, particularly the omega-3 index, represents an important evolution in the omega-3 conversation. Increasingly, the focus is moving from simply recommending intake levels toward understanding how supplementation translates into quantifiable changes in omega-3 status.

 

Expanding Demand Across Life Stages

The continued growth of the DHA category is also being shaped by demographic and health trends.

Several application areas remain particularly important:

Prenatal and maternal health

DHA intake during pregnancy is widely associated with positive maternal and fetal outcomes, including improved fetal brain and eye development and reduced risk of early preterm birth. As awareness grows among healthcare professionals and consumers alike, prenatal formulations increasingly prioritize DHA content and quality.

Vision health

Given DHA’s structural presence in retinal tissue, vision health remains one of the most compelling application areas for omega-3 supplementation across both pediatric and aging populations.



Cognitive health and healthy aging

As global populations age, interest in nutritional approaches that support cognitive function and long-term brain health continues to increase. DHA’s role in neuronal membrane integrity makes it central to ongoing research in brain health and healthy aging.

Together, these drivers are expanding DHA’s relevance beyond traditional supplement categories into a broader range of wellness and life-stage applications.

The Algae-Derived DHA Market Is Expanding Steadily

Another important development in the omega-3 category is the steady growth of algae-derived DHA, which is increasingly being adopted across multiple nutrition segments.

According to the GOED Ingredient Market Report 2024, global production of algae-based omega-3 oil reached 5,633 metric tons in 2024 and is projected to grow to approximately 6,464 metric tons by 2027, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of about 4.7%.

The global market value for algae-based omega-3 ingredients was estimated at US$274.2 million in 2024. Although this represented a slight 1.2% decrease in value, the change was largely attributed to price adjustments resulting from improved production capacity, increased formulation diversity, and a growing number of suppliers. Importantly, the continued increase in production volumes suggests a clear upward trajectory in ingredient adoption.

From a geographic perspective, the United States remains the largest consumer of algae-based omega-3, accounting for 34.9% of global demand, followed by China (24.8%), Asia-Pacific markets (16.8%)—driven largely by South Korea, and Europe (15.5%). All of these regions are expected to grow in volume consumption between 2024 and 2027, with an average CAGR of approximately 4.7%.

 

Applications Driving Growth

The GOED report also highlights how algae-derived DHA is distributed across key applications.

Dietary supplements represent 24.1% of total volume, but this segment is projected to grow the fastest, with 7.5% growth through 2027.

The supplement category is also being reinforced by broader consumer interest in cognitive health. According to SPINS market data, products containing DHA within brain health formulations are experiencing sales growth of approximately 12.6%, reinforcing DHA’s role as one of the fastest-expanding functional ingredients in this category.

New Expectations in the Omega-3 Category

As the DHA market evolves, brands and formulators are evaluating ingredients through a broader set of criteria.

Supply reliability
Global omega-3 supply chains remain closely linked to marine ecosystems. While fish-derived oils continue to play an essential role, fluctuating environmental conditions introduce variability that can affect supply availability. Complementary sourcing models are therefore gaining interest.

Sensory performance and formulation flexibility
Consumers increasingly expect omega-3 supplements that deliver potency without strong odor or taste. This is particularly important as DHA is incorporated into newer delivery formats such as gummies, liquids, and functional foods.

Ingredient origin, production methods, and sustainability considerations are becoming increasingly important to both brands and consumers.
